The Wake-Up Call: From Burnout to Breakthrough

My Personal Journey

I understand because I've been there too. At one point, my entire business focus had narrowed to being a business owner, pleasing my clients, and hitting my revenue goals.

I was doing "OK" but eventually, I wasn't excited about going to work in the morning. I wasn't thinking about bigger, better things or having bigger goals.

But everything shifted when my coach asked me this question: "How do you want to be remembered?"

That question sparked something deep inside me.

I realized I wanted to pursue my dream of becoming a coach that I had been telling myself was impossible - for 20 years.

Soon after I signed up for coaching training, earned several certifications, and delved even deeper into personal development through the process. Through curiosity and exploration, I found a much deeper meaning to the work I do every day.

Uncovering Your Purpose: A Journey of Curiosity and Action

This experience taught me the invaluable lesson of regularly pausing to reflect on our goals and motivations.

As entrepreneurs, it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day operations and lose sight of our bigger purpose.

The Myth of Waiting for Purpose

Many of us believe our purpose will one day be revealed to us in the future, and we wait for that moment to arrive. But the truth is, purpose is created through our actions in the present.

You can't wait for life to happen—you have to create it by living.

The Science Behind Purpose

Research shows that feeling your life has meaning can lead to better physical, mental, and spiritual health. It can even extend your longevity.

Many studies have found that individuals who perceive their lives as worthwhile experience positive transformations across all areas of life, from health to economic prosperity: see the References below.

Practical Steps to Uncover Your Purpose

Here’s how to spark experiences that might reveal deeper meaning to you:

  1. Spark Your Curiosity: When faced with uncertainty about your path, focus on what genuinely excites you. What activities or subjects ignite your curiosity and passion? Dive deep into these areas, exploring them with enthusiasm and open-mindedness.

  2. Take Action: Engage in activities that propel your dreams forward. Even small steps can make a significant difference. Take action, whether it's pursuing a hobby, volunteering, or seeking new connections.

  3. Trust Your Intuition: It's essential to pursue what you truly want, not just what you feel obligated to do. Let go of societal expectations or the pressures of others. Trust your intuition and follow your heart.

  4. Experiment and Reflect: Try new experiences and reflect on how they make you feel. Keep a journal to track your thoughts and emotions as you explore different activities and ideas.

The Many Sources of Purpose

Purpose can be found in a multitude of places, both within your personal and professional life. As you seek work that fulfills you, consider exploring these avenues:

  • Entrepreneurship: Starting your own business can be a fulfilling way to pursue your passions and make a difference. Being your own boss allows you to have control over your work and create something meaningful.
  • Serving others: Giving back through your business can be incredibly rewarding. Donating profits or your time to causes you care about can provide a sense of purpose and connection.
  • Creative expression: Building your business around your artistic pursuits can be a powerful outlet for self-expression and bring meaning to your life.
  • Mentoring and teaching: Sharing your knowledge and experience with others can be a deeply fulfilling endeavor. Mentoring or teaching can provide a sense of purpose and contribute to the growth of others.
  • Spirituality and faith: For many people, bringing their spirituality or faith to help guide their work provides a strong sense of purpose and direction. Feeling like you don’t need to keep your spiritual beliefs separate to your work can help you find meaningful work that aligns with your values.

Whatever gives your life meaning, it’s essential to pursue it. Purpose doesn’t just enhance your professional life—it’s the driving force that helps you create value in the world and in your own life.
